The Difference Between a Psychologist – Psychiatrist – Counsellor

I am often asked what is the difference between a psychologist, psychiatrist, and a counselor? In Australia, psychologists undergo the equivalent of six years full time study to be eligible for full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. This usually involves a minimum of four years studying psychology at university to have probationary registration. Followed by either two years supervised practice or supervised postgraduate study at university (Masters or Doctorate level). When a psychologist gains full registration they are then usually eligible for a Medicare provider number. The Medicare provider number allows clients with a Mental Health Care Plan to be Bulk Billed or claim a rebate back after receiving psychological services. Registration also provides protection for consumers. If your psychologist breaches your confidentiality, behaves inappropriately or unethically towards you, you can report them to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency branch in your state. In Australia psychologist’s do not prescribe medication at present, but offer clients new ways to look at and approach their problems.

A psychiatrist is a medical specialist. They gain a medical degree followed by specialist training in psychiatry. Because they are medical officers, psychiatrists are able to prescribe medication and they tend to see people at the more severe end of the spectrum of mental and emotional difficulties.

Literally anyone who wants to can set himself or herself up in practice, as a counselor or therapist, and you do not need to be registered to hold either title. No training is required and with no registration there is no protection for consumers. However there are many effective and ethical professionals who work under the title counselor or therapist. Most of these have had tertiary (university or TAFE level) training in the field.

The practice is not in a position to offer 24/7 crisis support to clients.
